How to write a CV that gets you shortlisted
Recruiters in South Africa often spend less than a minute on each CV, so make yours easy to scan. Put your contact details at the top, add a short profile that matches the job you're applying for, then list your experience and qualifications with the most recent first.
Keep it to two pages
For entry-level jobs, learnerships and internships, one or two pages is enough. Leave out your full home address, marital status and religion, employers don't need them and they take up space.
Show what you did, not just where you were
Under each job, write two or three lines that start with an action word: "Handled cash and balanced the till daily", "Helped 40+ customers a day", "Captured stock on Excel". Numbers make your work real.
No work experience yet?
Focus on your studies, projects, volunteering, church or community work, sport and any in-service training. Read our guide on writing a CV with no experience.
Applying for a government post? You'll also need a completed Z83 form.
