How to fill in the Z83 form correctly (2026 guide)

Every job in the South African public service, from a general worker at a municipality to a nurse at a provincial hospital, asks for a Z83 form. It is the official "Application for Employment" and it is the first thing a screening panel looks at. If it's incomplete, your CV often isn't even opened.

The good news: the form is short, and filling it in properly takes about 15 minutes. You can use our free Z83 Form Filler to type it out neatly and print it.

Section A: The advertised post

Copy the position title and reference number exactly as they appear in the advert. If you apply for three posts, you need three separate Z83 forms, each with its own reference number. Under "when can you start", write "Immediately" if you're unemployed, or your notice period if you're working.

Section B: Personal details

Use your names exactly as they appear on your ID. Then answer every Yes/No question, even the ones that obviously don't apply to you. A blank answer is one of the most common reasons forms are rejected. If you answer "Yes" to any question about criminal cases, disciplinary cases or business with the State, explain briefly in the space provided. Being honest is important: false information can lead to disqualification or dismissal later.

Section C: Contact details

Give a phone number you will answer and an email address you check every day. Many departments now contact shortlisted candidates by email, and interview invitations can come with only a few days' notice.

Section D and E: Qualifications and experience

List your highest qualification first, including the institution and year. In the work experience section, list your most recent job first with dates and your reason for leaving. You may write "see attached CV", but a filled-in section helps the panel and shows care.

Section F: Sign it

An unsigned Z83 is treated as if you never applied. Sign and date it by hand after printing, or add your signature before you scan it for an email application.

Final checklist before you submit

  • Correct reference number for this specific post
  • Every question answered
  • Signed and dated
  • Detailed CV attached
  • Certified copies only if the advert asks for them at this stage
  • Submitted before the closing date, using the method in the advert
